General Information:

The Fort Sam Houston Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) partners with the Warrior & Family Support Center (WFSC) to provide all SFAC services. The SFAC is a one-stop administrative resource center hosting 14 different services supporting Warriors in Transition, their Family members and Surviving Spouses. Injured Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen are transported to Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas, for treatment. Fort Sam Houston includes Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) which is one of the world’s best medical treatment centers. This Level 1 Trauma Center specializes in treatment of burns and amputations. With the world class burn center and the Center for the Intrepid seriously wounded Warriors receive the finest treatment and recuperation programs. The SFAC provides these Warriors and their Family members extensive assistance on their road back to duty or in their transition back to their civilian community. SFAC services include:

Information, Referral and Follow-Up (IR&F):
Provide reception services and a general orientation on the SFAC services available. Conduct initial intake and make referrals, and maintain resource listings on services provided in local community.

Military Personnel Services (HR):
Provides supportive actions concerning Retirement, Transition Management, Military Benefits, and Review of Records. Provide ID Card and CAC Card for Warriors in Transition by appointment only.

Outreach Services:
Coordinate and provide education and training on SFAC services, provide Community Outreach Services and Referrals based on the needs of member and perform ACS referral services (EFMP, Respite Care, other special needs, etc.).

Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS):
Provides full range of services concerning Military Pay, Travel Pay Issues, and Family Member Travel actions.

Traumatic Servicemember Group Life Insurance (TSGLI):
Provide educational briefings on program guidelines, eligibility and claims processing. Provide one-on-one claims application assistance and appeal support; provide educational briefings to Chapter 61 Medical Retirees on Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC) and assistance with application preparation

Army Wounded Warrior Program (AW2):
Provide assistance in obtaining full VA and Army benefits, assist in obtaining healthcare upon retirement, provide financial counseling in purchasing of home and food for holidays, ensure awards duly earned are received.

Social Services Assistance (ASAP):
Provides comprehensive prevention education, intervention, information and referral assistance for social services (substance abuse, suicide prevention, stress and anger management, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Exceptional Family Member Program, Family Advocacy Program).

Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP):
Provide mandatory pre-separation counseling, assist in completing Pre-separation Counseling Checklist, and provide one on one transition and employment counseling.

Army Continuing Education System (ACES):
Provide education counseling services, Basic Skills Improvement, testing services when available (CLEP, DANTES and AFCT), VA Education Benefits counseling, evaluation of military experience for college credit, and GoArmyEd portal procedures for Army Tuition Assistance.

Staff Judge Advocate (SJA)/Paralegal:
Information on the Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) / Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) process, procedures and assistance. Provide legal assistance services (Powers of Attorney, Traumatic Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Program, Notary Services, Wills and Estates, and claims processing).

Army Child, Youth & School Services (CYS Services):
Provide all registration services for Army Child, Youth & School Services programs including Sports and Family Child Care (FCC) homes. Manage all Warriors in Transition child care issues.

Texas Veterans Commission (TVC):
Texas Veterans Commission (TVC): Provides one-on-one personalized employment services, including targeted job information, career counseling, case management specific to individual needs, job referrals and job placement. Counsel and advocate for personnel separating from the military under medical disability, completion of service and retirement.

Financial Services:
Provide Prevention and Education Classes, Credit Management, Budget Development, Consumer Information and Awareness, Financial Counseling and Assistance, Emergency financial assistance in the form of a loan or grant, and monetary assistance for undergraduate education of dependent children.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM):
Assists in the successful transition to civilian life, provides Federal Employment Assistance in the form of Federal Career Exploration, Resume Classes/Assistance, Application for Veterans Preference, Career Fairs, and Federal Agency Liaison Assistance.

Pastoral Services (CH):
Located within WTB. Provide religious services through on call system, provide counseling services as needed, provide resources such as religious literature, counseling materials, religious items, and any materials that meet religious needs, coordinate with all local community services in support of Warriors in Transition.

Veterans Administration (VA):
Assist in applying for any benefits that can be awarded while on active duty and in beginning the application process for service-connected compensation benefits and provide extensive information regarding Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service (VR&E) benefits resource center for information and referral services.

Donations:

The WFSC is supported by donations and gifts from businesses, civic and veterans organizations and individual community members. In support of Warriors in Transition and their Family members, the WFSC provides limited support to the SFAC program. Information:
